  • Buying and selling cars
  • Motor mechanics
  • Tyre fitters
  • Valeters
  • Vehicle delivery
  • Parking jockey
  • Plus many more…

An important point to remember is that a motor trade insurance is not a licence for you to drive any car. This type of policy is specifically designed to cater for the needs of the genuine motor trader. For example someone that is in the buying and selling of used cars trade from home. They may need to take the vehicles to garages for repairs, MOTS etc and need to have a motor policy to ensure that they can legally drive their car or van on public highways.

Motor Trade and the MID
From 2011 a new law has been introduced that can affect most motorists including the motor trade industry. A policy known as the Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) was introduced in 2011 which requires all vehicles to be insured or a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) to be obtained. Failure to insure or SORN the vehicle can result in the registered keeper of the vehicle to be fined and also the vehicle to be seized and disposed off.

Motor traders that are buying and selling car must make sure that any vehicles they buy are listed on the MID database. Details as to how you can do this can be obtained from your motor trade insurance provider. Also when you sell the vehicle, it is your duty to remove the vehicle from the MID database. Depending on the motor trade insurance company you will be given various options as to how you can do this. It may mean using a computer to logon onto the MID or insurers website to achieve this or an SMS text message and or via your broker.

Motor traders should ensure that they list their own vehicles and any vehicles to be sold on the MID database immediately if possible or certainly within a few days.
